Are there ... others?

A couple of times during this process people have FREAKED ME OUT by saying, "OK, but what about the one in ...." and naming a place where there is a Peter Pan statue. Each time this has happened I've thought, "Wait ... are there actually more than seven??"

But no. There are seven original Peter Pan statues by Sir George Frampton. There are, however, some other cool Peter Pan statues by other sculptors in other places. Here a few that people have told me about (but I haven't seen myself ... I don't feel the need to search out every sculpture of Peter Pan ever made).

Dunedin, New Zealand

This statue of Peter Pan and Tinkerbell is by English sculptor Cecil Thomas. It was donated to the gardens by Harold Richmond and installed in 1963. Three years later, it was joined by another Cecil Thomas sculpture based on the Peter Pan story: this one features Wendy. You can read about the Dunedin sculptures at this site.

Kirriemuir, Scotland

This statue by Alistair Smart -- erected in 1968 and then replaced and moved to its current spot in 1994 -- is significant because it commemorates the birthplace of author J. M. Barrie. Definitely a good reason to have Peter Pan statue, even if it's not one of the Frampton sculptures. Here's a bit about this one, from the same site where I got the picture.

New York City

Perhaps one of the oddest journeys was taken by this Peter Pan statue by Charles Andrew Hafner. It was made in 1928, making it a contemporary of the Frampton statues, and originally stood in a fountain in a New York theatre lobby. In 1975 it was moved to Carl Schurz Park in Manhattan, but in August 1998 it disappeared -- only to be found the next day at the bottom of the East River. After this act of presumed vandalism, the statue was replaced (more securely). You can read about the statue's history here and its disappearance and recovery here (the latter site is also the source of this picture).

Does your city, park, or favourite vacation spot have a statue of Peter Pan that's not mentioned on these pages? Let me know about it!
