NEWS & EVENTS

I have TWO exciting live events coming up this spring and summer:

I'll be reading at Sparks Literary Festival at Memorial University on Sunday, April 28, 2024 -- check out the details and the great lineup of writers at this link. The detailed schedule for the day hasn't been released yet so I don't know what time I'll be reading, but when they tell me, I'll tell you!

I'll also be reading at Ochre Fest in Ochre Pit Cove on July 5, 2024 at 7:30 in the evening, along with a wonderful line-up of writers that evening including Xaiver Michael Campbell (who was my podcast guest to talk about his book Black Harbour) and Newfoundland icon Michael Crummey. The whole weekend is going to be amazing: check out the lineup here and consider making the trip to beautiful Ochre Pit Cove.

I'm also going to be doing a talk in Trinity in August as a guest of the Trinity Historical Society -- more details on that coming soon!

VIRTUAL EVENTS

I'm doing another livestreamed reading and Q&A session on my Facebook page (it's public, so you don't have to be on FB to see it) at 8:30 NL time on Thursday, March 28, 2024. I hope people will tune in live and send me some questions to answer in real time; I'll also post a link to the recorded version once the livestream is over.

Like most writers, I missed out on a lot of live events in 2020 and 2021, some of which went virtual.

  • In late November 2021, Such Miracles and Mischiefs had the amazing luck of being released at almost the exact same time as the Omicron variant of Covid-19, so instead of a live launch, I got to be part of Breakwater Books' online "Fall Showcase." You can see my video here.

  • In July 2020, instead of reading from A Roll of the Bones at the annual festival at Ochre Pit Cove, I did a video reading; you can see all the beautifully-produced videos, including mine, at their website.

  • I've done a couple of Facebook Live Reading/Q&A events (and probably will do more, even without pandemic restrictions, because it's a fun way to connect with readers far and near.) Here's one I did in May 2020, when A Roll of the Bones was out and I was working on Such Miracles and Mischiefs; here's another from February 2022, when Such Miracles had been out for a few months and I was really missing out on live events!

I love visiting book clubs! I'm happy to visit your book club in person if you're in the St. John's/Mount Pearl/CBS area; I can also visit by Skype or Zoom or whatnot if you're meeting virtually. If your book club is planning to read any of my books, and you'd like me to visit, click the "Contact" button above and drop me a line. You can also go the "Discuss" page for some resources.

Past Events

It was such an honour when Most Anything You Please won the 2019 NL Reads competition, sponsored by NL Public Libraries and CBC Newfoundland and Labrador, and the accompanying Margaret Duley Award. Here are all the nominees with our reader/defenders:

In September 2016 I visited the Holyrood Library for a book club meeting and discussion with this lovely group! I love book clubs and I'd be glad to come to yours.

On April 21, 2015, I participated in an event at Government House in  St. John's, celebrating the 90th anniversary of Newfoundland women winning the right to vote and run for public office. Here's my video report on that event:

Official launch of A Sudden Sun at the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company, October 16, 2014

I was honoured to be part of the Michael J. McCarthy Memorial Readings at the Mount Pearl Public Library with talented storytellers Christine Hennebury and Dale Jarvis in early November 2014
